When charging the A/C system with Freeze 12, use the above chart to
match the manufacturers requirements. Freeze 12 is lighter than R-12, so less
refrigerant is needed to equal the same volume in the cooling system. Recover
the R-12 from the A/C system at the Low Side to leave behind as much mineral oil
as possible. Because some oil is lost during recovery and when changing
accumulator/drier or receiver/drier, for maximum A/C system performance, it is
recommended that 3 ounces of Polyolester lubricant (also known as Ester
lubricant) be added to the A/C system before charging with Freeze 12.
Install new Freeze
12 service fittings (Johnsen's # S19002 - Low Side, #S19000A or #S19001A‑ High
Side). If the A/C system being converted is equipped with a High Pressure Relief
Valve, a High Pressure Cutout Switch must be installed in accordance with. EPA
SNAP regulations. Deep evacuate (using Sercon # SR1255A Deep Vacuum Pump or
equivalent) to remove any residual R- 12 and/or any
non-condensables.
Recharge the A/C system
with approximately 10% less Freeze 12 than the recommended factory R-12 charge
(refer to the chart above). When the A/C system is fully charged with Freeze 12,
the suction line pressure will be about 5-10 psig lower than it was with R‑ 12,
depending upon the system. When charging the A/C system with Freeze 12 into the
suction line, note that the pressures will rise and then level off as the system
becomes filled. DO NOT OVERFILL THE
SYSTEM! Overfilling may cause damage to the compressor and other A/C
components! When the A/C system is fully charged, drive the vehicle for
approximately 5 minutes with the A/C controls set at maximum A/C to initially
balance the system. Thereafter, operate the system normally. Finally, install
the Freeze 12 service label (Johnsen's #
S19020A).
